Understanding Brow Lifts

During the aging process, the forehead starts to sag, putting the eyebrows in a lower position. This sagging results in lines across the forehead, between the eyebrows, and near the outer corners of the eyes. In addition to looking aged and tired, this can also result in tension headaches due to constant forehead strain.

A sagging forehead and its associated strain often result in horizontal lines on the forehead and what we call “forehead fatigue.” A brow lift procedure can soften your appearance by raising the forehead skin and eyebrows and by removing excess tissue.

Brow Lift Candidates

Brow Lift surgery is ideal for patients who have heavy, low-hanging eyebrows and deep, horizontal lines across their foreheads. By relieving forehead strain, those who suffer from frequent tension headaches should see almost immediate improvement. Brow lifts are often performed alongside other periorbital procedures such as an upper and lower eyelid lift or “blepharoplasty.”

Brow Lift FAQs

As with other periorbital procedures (operations concerning or taking place around the eyes), the ultimate aims of a brow lift are guided by your own desires and facial contours. The procedure will vary depending on your areas of greatest concern (wrinkles, tension headaches, frown lines, drooping eyelids, etc.) so it’s best to come prepared with a list of possible improvements in mind.

There are several types of brow lifts that can be performed depending on your anatomy and individual situation. Hairline brow lifts elevate the brows and remove excess skin, while endoscopic brow lifts secure the brow in a higher position through a few small incisions hidden between hair follicles. Temporal brow lift helps address the outside portion of the brows and can be performed in conjunction with a pretrichial or an endoscopic brow lift.

You and your surgeon will discuss the option best suited to your needs during your consultation.

Brow lift incisions are easily concealed along the natural contours of your face and hairline, leaving little to no discernable trace of the operation. By taking the healing process seriously and protecting the exposed areas of your face from unnecessary UV exposure, you give yourself the best chance of that effortless, natural look.

Bruising and swelling are typical after surgery. A postoperative visit is required several days after surgery to review results, remove sutures as needed, and to answer any questions you may have. Patients are encouraged to avoid strenuous activities for at least 2 weeks as the healing process continues.

Patients will see the full results of the brow lift gradually in the weeks and months that follow, especially as swelling resolves completely and scars mature into faint, fine lines. In most cases, the results of your brow lift can persist for upwards of a decade or longer!
